Disaster! Abramovich Sanctioned By UK Government

Russian billionaire and Chelsea FC owner, Roman Abramovich has been hit with sanctions from the UK Government.

The UK’s decision follows Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which has garnered global condemnation over the past weeks. Mr. Abramovich put the reigning European and world champions up for sale in what he described in a statement as being ‘in the best interest of the club’.

In a post on its official instagram account, Chelsea FC made the following announcement;  Chelsea Football Club has been advised that its owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK Government.

By virtue of his 100 per cent ownership of Chelsea FC plc and affiliated entities, Chelsea FC would normally be subject to the same sanctions regime as Mr Abramovich. However, the UK Government has issued a general license that permits Chelsea FC to continue certain activities.

We will fulfill our men’s and women’s team fixtures today against Norwich and West Ham, respectively, and intend to engage in discussions with the UK Government regarding the scope of the license. This will include seeking permission for the license to be amended in order to allow the Club to operate as normal as possible. We will also be seeking guidance from the UK Government on the impact of these measures on the Chelsea Foundation and its important work in our communities.

The club will update further when it is appropriate to do so.”

The Chelsea FC owner had waived all of the club’s indebtedness to him and previously announced that the profit realised from the reported GBP 3.3B sale of the London-based club would be donated to a fund set up for victims of the war in Ukraine.
